Shatter, Live Resin, Hash & Diamonds: A Beginner’s Map of Concentrates

Concentrates have the worst jargon-to-explanation ratio in cannabis. Shatter, live resin, hash, diamonds — four completely different things that get lumped under one menu tab and rarely get defined. Here’s the beginner’s map: what each one is, how it’s made at a high level, and what it looks and smells like in your hand.

Shatter

What it is: a cannabis extract refined into a thin, translucent, amber sheet — named for exactly what it does when you drop it. How it’s made: plant material is run through a solvent-based extraction, then the result is purged and cooled into that glassy slab.

In your hand: stable, brittle at room temperature, honey-to-amber in colour. A clean shatter snaps cleanly and smells faintly of the strain it came from — the aroma concentrates along with everything else.

Live resin

What it is: extract made from plants that were flash-frozen at harvest instead of dried and cured first. Freezing preserves the volatile aromatic compounds that drying loses, which is the entire point.

In your hand: softer and saucier than shatter — think wet sugar to soft budder textures — with a much louder, fresher aroma. If shatter smells like a photograph of the strain, live resin smells like the plant standing in the room.

Hash

What it is: the oldest concentrate on earth — trichomes (the resin glands on the flower) separated mechanically and pressed into a solid. No solvents involved; traditional methods are sieving or hand-rubbing, modern ones use ice water.

In your hand: a dense, pliable dark bar or coin that softens with warmth. Traditional pressed imports like our Afghan Hash read spice, cedar and warm earth on the nose — a completely different aromatic register from any solvent extract.

Diamonds

What they are: THCA crystallized out of an extract into literal faceted stones, usually sitting in a pool of aromatic “terp sauce.” The crystals themselves are nearly odourless; the sauce around them carries all the fragrance.

In your hand: exactly what the name promises — clear-to-golden crystals from grain-of-salt to gravel size, glistening in sauce.

The one-table version

  • Shatter — glassy amber sheet · solvent-extracted · quiet aroma, snaps clean
  • Live resin — soft sauce/budder · flash-frozen plant, solvent-extracted · loudest aroma of the four
  • Hash — pressed trichome bar · mechanical, no solvent · spiced, earthy, old-world
  • Diamonds — THCA crystals in sauce · crystallized from extract · the sauce is the fragrance

Shopping the shelf

Everything above rotates through the concentrates shelf, photographed in-house like the rest of the menu — texture is half the story with concentrates, so the macro shots matter. Hash lives in its own subcategory now, and delivery works the network standard: order by 9:00 PM, at your Brampton or Mississauga door in one to two hours, ID checked 19+ at handoff.
