CBD sits in its own corner of the menu with its own three-letter mystique. This is the label-literacy version of the story: what the compound actually is, how it differs from THC as a matter of chemistry, and how to read any CBD product without squinting.
What CBD is, in one paragraph
CBD (cannabidiol) and THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) are the two most abundant cannabinoids — compounds produced in the cannabis plant’s resin. They’re chemical siblings with nearly identical formulas arranged differently, and that structural difference is why they behave differently and why the law and the marketplace treat them as distinct categories. Some cannabis plants (hemp varieties) are bred to produce mostly CBD and only trace THC; that’s where most CBD-dominant products start.
Reading a CBD label
- Total CBD in mg — the headline number, same convention as edibles. A “300mg bottle” means the whole bottle contains 300mg of CBD.
- Per-serving math — total ÷ servings (or ÷ millilitres for oils). A 300mg / 30ml oil is 10mg per ml; the dropper is usually 1ml. Same arithmetic you already use on the edibles shelf.
- Spectrum words — “isolate” is CBD alone; “broad spectrum” is CBD plus other hemp compounds with THC removed; “full spectrum” keeps trace THC (legally minimal). The word tells you what else came along from the plant.
- THC content — CBD-dominant products state their THC (often “<0.3%” or an exact mg). If that number matters to you, it’s the second thing to check.
The formats
Oils/tinctures: CBD in a carrier oil with a measured dropper — the most label-transparent format. Gummies and edibles: per-piece dosing identical in convention to their THC cousins. Topicals: creams and balms, labelled by total mg per container.
